When did eating “healthy” become a pass/fail test?
Every day, I talk with people about what they eat.
And every day — without fail — someone says:
- “But I’m eating healthy…”
- “I didn’t eat too badly.”
- “I fell off my diet, but I tried to be good.”
- “I don’t get it — I eat healthy, but I’m still not seeing results.”
It’s like “eating healthy” became some moral badge. Like if you check that box, everything else should magically fall into place — weight loss, energy, confidence, the whole shebang.
Here’s the truth:
Eating healthy is not a personality trait.
It’s not a badge of honor.
And it’s not a guarantee that your body will change.
So… what is “healthy eating”?
By definition, it’s a pattern of eating that supports your overall health: whole foods, lots of produce, adequate protein, minimal ultra-processed stuff, and a mix of nutrients.
Sounds solid. But let’s not confuse that with:
✅ Guaranteed fat loss
✅ “Doing everything right”
✅ The right to avoid nuance or context
Because honestly…
You can “eat healthy” and still overeat.
You can “eat healthy” and feel exhausted, bloated, or stuck.
You can eat cookies and fries and still be eating healthy overall.
Let’s reframe it.
Instead of asking:
“Was I good or bad today?”
Try asking:
- Did I eat in a way that supports how I want to feel?
- Did I fuel for energy and recovery?
- Am I being honest with myself about portions and patterns?
- Am I trying to be perfect all the time, knowing that is impossible?
Here are some tips to help you stop moralizing food:
- Drop the “good vs bad” language.
You’re not a better person because you ate a salad. You’re not a worse one for having fries. It’s just food. - Healthy ≠ low-calorie.
Trail mix, avocado toast, protein smoothies — all nutrient-dense, but also high in calories. They’re great… but they’re not “freebies.” - Zoom out.
One “off” meal doesn’t matter. Patterns matter. Your sleep, stress, movement, and mindset matter too. - Clarify your goal.
If you want fat loss, focus on total intake, not just food quality. If you want to feel good, ask how your meals are working for or against your energy, digestion, and mood.
Client A-Ha Moment:
One of my clients recently said:
“I realized I was chasing ‘healthy’ like it was a prize — but I never stopped to ask if it was actually working for my goals. Once I did, everything shifted.”
BOOM. That’s it. That’s the work.
